Biology Evolution in a Box                                                                    Olivia Jacobs

Darwin’s theory of evolution can be represented in many ways. In my box, you will find Cheerio’s, a white flower, a yellow flower, a small toy man, two army men, two pipe cleaner tigers, three sea shells, a snail shell, two Lego plants, a desert land building platform, and a mountainous land building platform.

-The many Cheerio’s represent over population as there are several of them.
-The white flower and yellow flower similar in shape and size. The petals and stamen are nearly the same and represent analogous structures, as well as variation. Also the represent Genetic Trait as the different colors are genetic traits.
-The toy man represents anatomy even though he’s obviously not anatomically correct, and hereditability because you can assume he got theses genetic traits from his parents.
-The two army men represent the Struggle for Survival because being in the army; they’re probably struggling to survive as species do in challenging environments.
-The two pipe cleaner tigers represent variation as they are slightly different in appearance but are still the same species as well as species and population because there are two of this species within the box. The represent natural selection as the Tigers gathered the most dominant traits from their parents.
-The three sea shells represent paleontology because if the were found as fossils in a land area by paleontologists, the area may have once been under water or near a body of water. Also they represent gradualism as the shells formed over time through and ocean currents. The represent biogeography because they wouldn’t be found in an area that has always been dry.
-The snail shell represents fitness because snail shells help snails to survive in threatening situations by protecting them from harm.
-The two Lego plants represent Decent with Modification as their similar appearance may lead to the belief that they share common ancestors. The also represent Linnaeus and his classification system. You can imagine that they would represent catastrophism because there are plants that, for example, only grow in volcanic ash.
-The mountain building platform represents biogeography as this environment supports different types of organisms who have adapted to survive in these areas as well as gradualism because the land formed over time. Uniformitarianism is also represented because this mountain was probably formed by the same process other forms were made during.
- The layers of earth represent paleontology as fossils are usually found between layers and gradualism because the layers have built up over time.
